Application note: Environmental Monitoring

“Solving your gas monitoring application challenges with easy-to-integrate laser gas detection modules for system manufacturers.”

Introduction

Laser gas detection - based on Tunable Diode Laser Spectrometry or TDLS - provides a solution to many challenges in environmental gas monitoring and process control. The technology is an innovative alternative to sub-optimal traditional detection technologies and offers unique advantages like excellent target gas selectivity, calibration-free operation and ppm-level detectivity for greenhouse gases and precursors of ground-level ozone & acidification.

The Axetris Division of Leister Process Technologies offers Laser Gas Detection (LGD) modules for easy integration by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), active in diverse industrial segments, including environmental monitoring & process control.

“Axetris allows system integrators to access state-of-the-art laser gas detection technology”

Monitoring of CH4 greenhouse gas emissions

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) - about 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide (CO2). It outgases from reservoirs, dams, permafrost soils and landfills and is generated in agricultural and livestock operations. Axetris’ LGD can reliably and selectively measure methane in low ppm concentrations - without the need for frequent recalibration. It also provides continuous sensor status monitoring and is thus ideally suited for underwater or remote-site applications where access is very costly, e.g. in environmental research. These applications are related to CO2 certificate trading and/or to compliance with environmental regulations for reduction of GHG emissions.

Axetris LGD advantages:

  • Low ppm-level detectivity of CH4
  • High CH4 selectivity
  • Calibration-free (ideal for remote sites)
  • High stability
  • Continuous sensor status monitoring
Monitoring of NH3 emissions in livestock operations

Livestock production is a major contributor to ammonia (NH3) emissions that present a serious health & safety hazard for the personnel, the animals and the environment in general. Because of its role in acidification, eutrophication and ground-level ozone generation, ammonia emissions need to be reduced within the framework of the EU Directive on National Emission Ceilings (NEC Directive). Increasingly farmers are required to install ammonia scrubbers in livestock operations to reduce NH3 emissions. Additionally, ventilation control needs to be optimized in order to reduce exposure of animals to NH3.

Axetris’ LGD presents an excellent solution to this measurement challenge because it provides a contact-less measurement, and -unlike electrochemical detectors- does not degrade over time. It thus enables continuous, low ppm-range NH3 measurements and can be used for effective ventilation control and scrubbing installation management to reduce health threats and odour nuisance from stable discharge air.

Axetris LGD advantages:

  • No ageing or degradation
  • Calibration-free
  • High NH3 selectivity
  • Low ppm-level detectivity

Monitoring of NH3 slip in de-NOx processes based on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

In power generation, NOx can be reduced by 99% with SCR where NH3 (or aqueous urea) is injected into the exhaust gas stream to react with NOx on the surface of a catalyst to form nitrogen and water.

This process has found its way into emission control of ship, truck and car diesel engines. In all cases ammonia slip can occur, which either needs monitoring during operation or for system design and testing. The LGD is a perfect tool for OEM integrators because it offers a contact-less low ppm-level measurement of NH3 in a heated sample gas cell (190°C).

Axetris LGD advantages:

  • 190° hot-gas measurement
  • Compensated for high moisture
  • High NH3 selectivity
  • Low ppm-level detectivity

urther to the examples discussed above, the LGD covers a broad range of gas monitoring & detection applications including combustion control, leak detection, process control, climate monitoring, safety and many more.

“In environmental applications the Axetris LGD provides outstanding value: both for the end-user and the system integrator”

Laser Gas Detection Technology Brief

Axetris uses proprietary technology-enhanced TDLS for gas detection, where a 0.1 nm narrow bandwidth diode laser beam is scanned across an absorption band of the target gas, performing a high-resolution near-infrared absorption measurement. Electronic lock-in technology allows separating the gas absorption information from electro-optical system information, leading to a detection method eliminating the need for a physical reference channel and offering continuous sensor status monitoring.

Axetris' laser gas detectors combine precise, contact-less optical measurements with high target gas selectivity, calibration-free operation and low cost-of-ownership in a flow-through set-up for extractive gas measurements.. Integration of the factory calibrated LGD into analyzers is relatively simple: the OEM provides power supply and the target gas (conditioned, filtered, where necessary) and receives a digital or analog signal out-put.
